My name is Laura Ross. I was born and raised in Little Rock. I started my college career at the College of Charleston majoring in marine biology until I took an Intro to Education class. I then found myself back home to the U of A, Fayetteville to complete with a Bachelors of Science in Education to then continue to receive my Masters of Arts in Teaching. This will be my 18th year to teach in the Little Rock School District and my 17th year at Fulbright. Whoa, time flies when you are having fun!
I am so glad that you all have chosen Fulbright as the elementary school for your children. Fulbright is a bright, cheerful school and I love the community feel. I feel very blessed to have taught Second Grade here since 2003.
I hope you are very excited about the learning adventure that is going to take place this year! I believe that every child can learn and will strive to make sure that I am reaching your child at whatever level they enter. I love to read (so much that I have to watch how many books/chapters I read in class or that is all I would do) and my hope is to share that love of reading with your child. We can take many journeys in books and they can be so exciting! I will be teaching reading and writing using a combination of whole group and small group instruction. We do a lot of writing in second grade and I hope to make writing very enjoyable for your child as well!
In math we will use many types of manipulatives (hands on) to solve problems. We will discuss strategies of different children and learn from others in solving problems. I like to integrate literature in all subjects to help students understand topics. Social Studies is also a great topic for students because they can relate very easily to the concepts we will be discussing as well as relating to the new standards this year. We also have Science standards which we will enjoy exploring not only with our minds but with out hands.
I have been married to Donnie for 14 years and have one child. Megan is 12 and has begun the Seventh Grade this year. I also have a stepson, Trey, who is in college after coming home from the Navy. We are a family of unusual pets. We had a chameleon named VeeBee who is not with us anymore (but I still talk about her and use her to teach with) as well as our fifteen plus sugar gliders, Gizzy, Luna, Dobby, Crabby, Fawn, Luke, Shaka, Socks, Stardust, Mr. and Mrs. Huts, Val, Mr. B, Ding, and Tinker bell. We also have many of their babies we are taking care of as we find forever homes for them! Having a family like this has given me a new found patience and love for children I didn’t know was possible. I know the amazing love and sense of protection you have for your children. Please know that I will love your children and do everything in my power to keep them safe and make them successful this school year!
Sincerely,
Mrs. Laura Ross
